Louis Dowdeswell Trumpet Academy: The $49 Skool

Louis' Trumpet Academy is Louis Dowdeswell's Skool community for comeback trumpet players, 197 members at $49 a month with nine admins.

Louis' Trumpet Academy is Louis Dowdeswell's Skool community for comeback players and amateur trumpeters, with 197 members at $49 per month or $469 per year, staffed by nine admins. It sits at rank 12 in the Skool Games Music top 50 and posted the second strongest 30-day recurring revenue change on Skool's public leaderboard of any Music room we broke down this week. Its sharpest decision is one sentence near the bottom: the money-back guarantee only applies if you pay annually.

How Louis' Trumpet Academy sells

It sells two extra notes. The first line of the page names a quantity, a capability and a deadline in that order: add two notes to your range, play with confidence on stage, in the next twelve weeks.

Two notes is a small enough promise to be believable and a specific enough one to be checkable, which is a harder combination to write than it looks. Most range marketing sells a register, usually the double high C nobody can produce, and a returning player has already failed at that. Two notes is the size of the next honest step.

Writing the promise that small is a choice about who believes you. The audience line is doing quiet work as well. The community's tagline names "comeback players and amateurs", which excludes professionals and rescues the beginner, and both groups share one specific fear the page names later: overblowing and still not hitting the high notes.

The about copy above is reproduced verbatim from the community's public Skool about page, with emoji removed and the page's bullet markup rendered as plain lines. Every claim on that page is the community's own, reported as written and not verified by us, including the range outcome, the study and performance credits and the trumpet players listed as accessible to members. We were not able to match the named recording credit, an album titled 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane', to any published discography, and report it strictly as the page's own wording. The terms of the money-back guarantee are not published on the about page. Membership, staffing and price figures are a snapshot taken on 26 August 2026 and will move.

Why put the guarantee behind the annual plan?

Because a guarantee is not reassurance, it is a price for taking a risk off the buyer, and this page charges for it in commitment rather than dollars. Monthly members get the same content and the same calls. What they do not get is the promise that they can ask for their money back.

Look at what each side is risking. A monthly member risks $49 and can leave in thirty days, so a guarantee would barely change their decision. A yearly member is handing over $469 in one payment for a room they have never been inside, and that is the decision a guarantee is actually built to unstick.

The founder gets the better half of the trade. Annual cash arrives up front, churn disappears for twelve months, and the refund exposure is bounded by however long the guarantee window runs. That last part matters and the about page does not state it, which is the one thing a buyer should check before paying annually.

What each plan gets Monthly $49 Yearly $469
Community, calls, video feedback Yes Yes
Annual cost $588 $469
Saving against paying monthly None $119, or 20.2 percent
Money-back guarantee Not offered Offered, terms not published
Who carries the risk The buyer, monthly The founder, once

On Skool the community owner administers refunds, not the platform, so a guarantee like this is a promise from a person rather than a policy you can appeal. Read the Skool refund policy before you rely on one, and check the window and the conditions in writing first.

Attach the risk reversal to the plan you want people on: a 20 percent saving moves a buyer who already trusts you, while removing the risk moves the one who does not. If annual payers are the goal, the guarantee belongs on the annual plan and the discount can be the smaller half of the argument.

Nine admins for 197 members

Nine admins against 197 members is roughly one admin per 22, which was the richest staffing we had logged in the Music category at the time of writing and was superseded in August 2026 by two rooms at roughly one per 17, The Sync Alliance and Pocket Singers Elite. Two smaller rooms outside Music go further: a ballet teacher certification runs nine admins against 72 members, roughly one per eight, and an acting mentorship runs five against 51.

The reason is printed on the page. A twelve week video accountability system that returns in-depth video responses weekly is an individual, scheduled deliverable, and that is the kind of promise which forces a room this small to hire. Nine people producing weekly video feedback for 197 members is roughly 22 videos each per week, which is a real workload rather than a marketing line.

Set that against the other Music rooms we broke down the same week and the pattern mostly holds.

Music community Members per admin What the promise is
Louis' Trumpet Academy About 22 Weekly individual video feedback
52 Week Guitar Player 3.0 About 44 A fixed 52-week curriculum, annual only
La Tribu DJ About 63 Six live founder calls a month
Chase's Guitar Academy About 106 Curriculum, founder feedback on the paid tier
Templo de Ingenieria Musical About 154 A monthly masterclass and a monthly live
DOXA Academia de Musica About 201 Daily written feedback and courses
Marthyn's Drum Camp 378 One weekly group call and a roadmap
Black Suit Music 549 Readiness and posted opportunities

Nobody here is understaffed, and the one row that does not fit is instructive rather than contradictory: 52 Week Guitar Player staffs at one per 44 while charging $2,400 a year, because it has sold a fixed weekly curriculum with public accountability rather than a library. Everywhere else the shape holds, which is that the promise picks the staffing and the staffing picks the price. See how to price a Skool community for where $49 lands across the platform.

A small thing this page got right: the button matches the copy

The about copy instructs the reader to tap the yellow button that says "Join $49/mo". The live button reads JOIN $49/month. That sounds like the least remarkable sentence in this article, and it is worth writing anyway.

Across our Music and Health breakdowns this month we have logged pages advertising a price the button contradicted, pages telling readers to join free while the button charged, and pages carrying deadlines that expired weeks earlier. Every one of those defects was created the same way: the copy was written once and the settings were changed later. Referencing the button by its colour and its exact label, as this page and one drumming room in the same top 50 both do, makes the mismatch visible to the founder the moment it happens.

The funnel, step by step

Trumpet players arrive from range and high-note searches and from Skool Discovery, join at $49 a month, and are then given a reason to move to the $469 annual plan that has nothing to do with the discount.

Trumpet range and high note searches
YouTube big band and trumpet audiences
Skool Discovery, ranked 12 in Music
Louis' Trumpet Academy197 members, $49/mo
The annual upgrade$469/yr plus the money-back guarantee
A twelve week video accountability cycle with weekly in-depth responses, so the thing a member is buying is being watched and corrected rather than being given more material

The twelve week cycle and the twelve week promise are the same twelve weeks, which is neater than it looks. The deliverable and the outcome share a clock, so a member always knows whether they are on track, and the founder always knows when to ask for the testimonial.

The formula you can copy

Promise the next step, not the destination. Two notes is a better headline than a register nobody reaches, and a comeback player can test it against their own horn inside a week. The Music lane rewards this: another room in the same top 50 sells a BPM number the same way, as we covered in Marthyn's Drum Camp.

Attach your risk reversal to the plan you want people on. A discount rewards the confident buyer. A guarantee converts the nervous one, and the nervous one is who you are asking for $469 up front.

Then staff for the promise you actually made. If you have sold individual feedback on a weekly clock, you have hired a team whether you have noticed yet or not. Write the promise you can keep and let the price follow it, as covered in how to write a Skool about page.

Frequently asked questions

What is Louis' Trumpet Academy on Skool?

Louis' Trumpet Academy is a private Skool community run by professional trumpet player Louis Dowdeswell for comeback players and amateurs. It has 197 members, nine admins and 2,302 posts, and costs $49 per month or $469 per year. Members get weekly group calls, a twelve week video accountability system with weekly in-depth responses, and the page's stated outcome of adding two notes of range in twelve weeks.

How much does Louis' Trumpet Academy cost?

The live join button reads $49 per month, and the annual option is $469 per year, which saves $119 against twelve monthly payments, or 20.2 percent. The about page states that only yearly members qualify for its money-back guarantee, and it does not publish the terms of that guarantee.

Who is Louis Dowdeswell?

Louis Dowdeswell is a professional trumpet player and producer who founded Louis' Trumpet Academy on Skool. His community's about page states that he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, performed with Michael Buble and Brian May, and recorded trumpet for a Paul McCartney studio album, all of which we report as the page's own claims.

How do you increase your trumpet range?

Range on trumpet comes from efficiency rather than force, so the standard approach is to build the embouchure and air support gradually with lip slurs, long tones, pedal tones and controlled ascending exercises, practised daily in short sessions rather than long ones. The common mistake, and the one this community's page names directly, is overblowing, which is pushing more air and more pressure at a note the embouchure is not yet set up to produce. Progress is usually measured in a semitone or two at a time, which is why this page sells two notes in twelve weeks rather than an octave.

How long does it take to get your range back after a break from playing?

Comeback players usually recover their old endurance faster than their old range, because muscle tone returns in weeks while the fine embouchure control that produces high notes takes months of consistent short sessions. Most teachers will tell a returning player to expect the low and middle register to feel normal within a month or two, and the top of the range to come back a semitone at a time after that. Twelve weeks for two notes, which is what this community's page promises, sits inside that range rather than outside it.

What is the lesson for other community builders?

Use your guarantee as the reason to choose the plan you actually want, and staff for the promise you wrote rather than the one you meant. A weekly individual deliverable is a hiring decision, and this room's nine admins against 197 members is what that decision looks like when it is honoured.
