Fundamentals of Tattooing: Ben Fisher's Marked Skool Course
Fundamentals of Tattooing is Ben Fisher's $49/month Skool with marked assessments and 1,227 members. How it compares, and why local rules still apply.

Fundamentals of Tattooing competes on grading rather than content, with Ben Fisher charging $49 a month on Skool, marking students' assessments himself and telling them up front that "Most people fail their first assessment", a line that sells rigour in a category where most online courses simply promise that anyone can do it.
It has grown quickly too. Created on 29 June 2026, the room showed 1,227 members about 130 days later. Tattooing is also a regulated activity in many places, which we cover below, because the page's pitch needs that context.
The numbers, 6 November 2026
- $49/month displayed price, or $197/year as stated
- 1,227 members, 2 admins
- 5.0 from 28 reviews
- 12 courses, 151 modules, 2,691 posts
- 14-day money-back guarantee stated
- Created 29 June 2026
- Leaderboard: not in the top 100 we read
How do the marked assessments work?
Students submit work and get it back with a scorecard and feedback, with photos circled green for right and red for fix, and must pass to move on. That turns a video course into something closer to a graded program, and is the page's central idea.
The sequence is a 30-day path of "lines → dot work → shading", with one skill a night in a fixed order. New students start with a setup module on the kit they need, then line drills on practice skin, then a first assessment. There is also a live call every Wednesday and more than 100 lessons.
The honest question for a buyer is capacity. One owner and one other admin serve 1,227 members. Ask how long marked work takes to come back today, because that turnaround is the product.
Who is Ben Fisher?
He is the owner, and his story is the classic self-taught route, as the page tells it.
The page also claims "150,000+ people have signed up to learn with me" and 1,100+ students in the room, which roughly fits the member count. All of this is his own account. We did not verify the studio, the bookings or the sign-up number.
Do local rules still apply if you learn at home?
Yes, and plainly so: licensing and health rules apply to tattooing wherever you do it, and an online course doesn't change them. The US Food and Drug Administration states that "The actual practice of tattooing is regulated by local jurisdictions." Requirements differ by place, so check with your local health department or licensing authority.
That matters because of how the page opens: "No apprenticeship needed." Read that as a statement about learning the craft, not as legal clearance to tattoo anyone. In some places a licence, registered premises, infection control training or a supervised route may be required before you touch another person's skin. Practice skin is one thing. Skin on a person carries real risks, so find out what applies to you before you buy a machine or take a client.
The room does describe "safe practice" as part of its teaching. That doesn't replace local requirements, and we have not reviewed its safety content.
How does it compare with other tattoo rooms on Skool?
It is larger than the tattoo rooms listed in our artists guide, and its point of difference is the marking system rather than the price.
| Community | Price | Members | Rating | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fundamentals of Tattooing | $49/mo | 1,227 | 5.0 (28) | Marked assessments, pass to move on |
| Tattoo Masterclass | $39/mo | 1,189 | 5.0 (33) | Basics to advanced, becoming fully booked |
| Tattoo Systems | $79/mo | 149 | 5.0 (6) | Structured education for working artists |
We also have a breakdown of Ziggy Tattoo School, read back in August, and a beauty professionals guide that ranks this room third on that list. Figures above were read on 6 November 2026.
What does the pricing tell us?
The annual plan is the real offer, because $197 a year equals about four months of the monthly price, or $16.42 a month. The page says the price goes up to $249 "for a limited time", and at that level it would be $20.75 a month.
That also explains a gap in the numbers. If all 1,227 members paid $49, the room would make $60,123 a month, enough to enter the top 100 on the leaderboard, where the floor was $52,600. It isn't on the list we read. So the average must be under about $42.87 a member, and a mix of annual plans would easily account for that. This is our inference.
The builder lesson: telling buyers most people fail is a confident move, because it turns a pass into something worth having. Marked work does raise your delivery load with every new member, so plan who does the marking before you scale it.
What should a beginner check?
Check the total cost and the rules before the course. The $49 won't cover your kit, so ask what the setup module requires and price it. Confirm the 14-day guarantee terms, and how long a marked assessment takes today. Then read your local rules, and ask a licensed studio what route it would recommend in your area.
